Background

Our name

ⵉⵎⴰⵍ, or "imal", is the Tamazight word for "future", from the ancient language of the Amazigh (Berber) people, who are native to Northern Africa. Northern Africa and the world stand in-between multiple possible futures ahead, some better, some worse.

What will the future hold? What will future generations say of us? Appropriately, at a time when hope in the future is lacking, the Arabic letters for "imal" also spell the Arabic word for "hopes".

Our regional identity

Our approach to climate action and our outlook are rooted in the experience of our regional identity, at the crossroads of Africa, the Arab region, and the Mediterranean.

We work in our region and beyond, for the benefit of our region and of the world.

Our origins

We have worked in government, NGOs, research, international cooperation, and the private sector.

A number of our co-founders worked in the Moroccan Presidency of COP22/CMP12/CMA1, with the 2016 summit in Marrakech. We are inspired by the promise of exercising a strong climate-ambitious and climate-vulnerable voice from Morocco, Africa, and the Arab region on the international stage, as well as by the promise of building strong local and endogenous capacity, from the region and for the region.

Our logo

Our logo intentionally evokes the global symbol of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), but with a Moroccan twist, also evoking zellij, the geometric cut-tile mosaic used in Moorish buildings.
