Green Economy Programme

Arab and African countries stand to gain greatly — while also facing key risks to manage — from the transition to a green economy.

Our Programme on the Green Economy aims to serve these countries by supporting just transition to net-zero, competitive green economies, with particular reference to North Africa, which offers both green transition leadership examples and cautionary examples of fossil-related transition risks.

A green economy encompasses not only renewable energy systems, but also energy efficiency, green industry and manufacturing, the circular economy, new mobility approaches, smart technologies and green innovation – bringing economic advantages including enhanced affordability, productivity, and independence.

Delivery of the green economy requires a step change in the means of implementation, notably finance, and tackling the structural barriers to effecting green economy transition at scale – with great potential for international cooperation to expand public finance and private investment, securing international exports and green trade, as well as just transition domestically.

Critically, the pace of the global transition to a net-zero green economy, particularly in the world's largest emitters, will also have extraordinary implications for the futures of Arab and African countries.
